Is this computer ready for your online test?

Check screens, camera, microphone, network and browser in Chrome or Edge, then work through the EPSO checklist. Nothing to install. Nothing you see or say here leaves this browser.

Your checks

Nothing checked yet. The browser asks before it lets this page use the camera, the microphone or the list of your screens.

  • OK fine for the test
  • NOTE fine, worth knowing
  • CHECK look at it yourself
  • FIX change this before the test

How to switch the other screens off

    Windows

Press Win + P and choose PC screen only (or Second screen only if the screen you want to keep is the external one). Or: Settings › System › Display › select the screen › Show only on 1.

The ProctorReady Windows app does this in one button (exam mode) and puts everything back afterwards.

    macOS

macOS can't switch a connected screen off. Unplug the cable of every screen except the one you use for the test. With a MacBook on an external screen, keep the lid closed (closed-lid mode needs the charger, a keyboard and a mouse). Mirroring is not enough: it is still two displays.

    Linux

GNOME: Settings › Displays › Single display, or press Super + P. KDE Plasma: Meta + P or System Settings › Display Configuration › untick the screen. X11: xrandr --output <name> --off.

Then reload this page. EPSO's instructions also ask you to pull the cables of the other screens: plugging a screen in during the test ends it.

    Camera

    …

Not started. Start the camera to see yourself as the proctoring software will.

      What the camera should see
      • Your whole face, centred, eyes roughly in the upper third of the picture. The oval is a guide.
      • Light from the front or the side; no window or lamp behind you.
      • Camera at eye height, looking straight at you, not up from the desk.
      • For the room scan you must move the camera slowly round the room, along the desk, under it and behind the screen. A laptop or a webcam on a long cable makes that easier.
      • Virtual cameras (OBS, Snap Camera, ManyCam, NVIDIA Broadcast and the like) and camera manager software are not allowed: quit them and pick the real camera.

      Microphone

      …

Not started. Start the microphone and say a few words.

The level is measured here in the browser. Nothing is recorded or sent.

        Network

        …

        Looking…

If the connection drops for more than 2 minutes during an EPSO test, the test ends. The watch asks this website for a tiny file every 5 seconds and counts slow answers and drops. It measures the way to this website, not to TAO, so run a speed test too.

During the test, leaving full screen ends it. Try it here once: press Esc to come back.

How to turn on Do not disturb

Windows 11: Settings › System › Notifications › Do not disturb. macOS: Control Centre › Focus › Do Not Disturb. GNOME: click the clock › Do Not Disturb. KDE: notifications icon › Do not disturb.

What only the Windows app can do

A web page can't look into your computer, and that's a good thing. The ProctorReady app for Windows can also:

              • switch your other screens off in one click (exam mode) and bring them back afterwards
              • repair screens that went missing and fix sound going to the wrong output (a TV or AV receiver)
              • read firewall, antivirus, proxy and VPN settings
              • see which other apps are running
              • tell whether the Proctorio extension is installed
              • spot a docking station, a virtual machine or a virtual screen driver

Versions for macOS and Linux are on the way. Until then, the checklist tells you what to look at yourself.
